Summary

“Chapter 1” takes place on February 28, 1983. Kirabo’s father, Tom, died in a car accident. At first everyone assumed it was just an accident, but soon gossip began and everyone blamed the widow, Nnambi.

“Chapter 2” takes place on March 1, 1983. News of Tom’s death arrived in Nattetta. Kirabo’s grandfather cried like a woman and was whisked away in a truck to be comforted by the men. Nsuuta and Alikisa ran to one another and mourned their son together.

“Chapter 3,” takes place on March 2, 1983. Kirabo was at school when her headmistress brought her into her office and told her that her father had died. Kirabo went to the funeral at his house. Her aunts yelled at his widow and told her she would be cast out of the family. Nsuuta sat next to Alikisa, and wanted to intervene...
