Summary

“Chapter 1” is set between April of 1977 and April of 1981. Tom went to work in the morning and told Nnambi she had better not be there when he got back, then told Kirabo to stay in her room until Nnambi left. Hours passed and Kirabo realized Nnambi had no intention of leaving. Kirabo, hungry, decided to go out and ask when she was leaving so she could eat breakfast. Instead, she strutted into Nnambi’s room, opened the blinds, and sat on the bed, which was a huge sign of disrespect. Then Kirabo told Nnambi a story about an evil stepmother and an ugly, spoiled stepsister. Later that afternoon, Grandmother arrived and told Kirabo to come with her. She told Nnambi to stay at the house to raise her children. Kirabo left with Grandmother and got into the car with Aunt Abi. Tom...
