Summary

“Chapter 1” is set in January of 1977. Kirabo’s father, Tom, announced that he wanted to take Kirabo to live with him in the big city, Kampala, after Kirabo finished her primary exams. Her grandfather did not want her to go at first, but Tom insisted she would get a better education in the city. Kirabo was exited to move to the city with Tom because she thought she would have a better chance of finding her mother in Kampala. Kirabo dressed in her best blue dress and waited for Tom, but he did not arrive, and she was embarrassed. He came at dinner and said he had to work at the office late. She got ready and hugged her grandparents, realizing for the first time how much it would hurt to leave them. They gave her gifts and her grandfather gave...
