Style

Points of View

A fictitious character tells the story in first person through her journaling. Through this point of view, the reader learns what the character is feeling and experiencing more accurately than if it is told in the third person. The journal entries bring authenticity to the story as the author combines historical events to the fictional storyline. It also allows the main character to delve into her thoughts more deeply and question her values, her feelings, and her plans for the future.

Even though the author tells the story in the first person, the author allows the main character to include third-person accounts within the journal entries that provide an objective viewpoint. For example, when Catherine is complaining to Cassie about Ann shortly after her arrival, Cassie is quick to point out to Catherine about.....
