Characters

Catherine Cabot Hall

The main character, Catherine, describes her life in her journal. She includes thoughts, actions, and relationships. When she begins the journal, she is 13 years old and writes in the journal for a period of less than a year and a half. In it, she chronicles the life she leads, and the people who are special to her.

Early in the journal, Catherine writes that her mother and her baby brother died after childbirth. She then describes how the three of them get along in the house without "a mother." Soon, the reader learns that Mrs. Shipman comes over often and assists with the things that mothers teach their daughters. Secretly, Mr. Hall is glad for this but he constantly maintains the posture that they are doing just fine.
