Chapter 17 Summary

Sophy leaves on her journey for the mills as many well-wishers stand by. Pinned to her dress is a braided lock of Asa's hair as a keepsake. Sophy stands there smiling and bravely enters the stage and heads toward her new life. Also starting a new life are Aunt Lucy and Teacher Holt as they marry just 3 days after they announce the wedding is back on. The crowd gathers and witnesses their wedding just as they had gathered to witness Cassie's funeral a month before.

In the mail, Catherine receives a package. Instantly, she recalls how she "met" the sender. The package contains two pieces of lace and a note "SISTERS BLESS YOU. FREE NOW. CURTIS.
