Chapter 16 Summary

As the boys watch Catherine quilt, they begin to ask questions. When Asa asks a literal question about the effectiveness of the quilt with the wife at home and the sailor at sea, all the rest of them laugh. Catherine tries not to but laughs as well. This is when she realizes this is their first occasion for laughter since Cassie's death. Matty also feels joy when she has time to play with her dolls. Even Catherine and Mammann join in the light fun. Just as the mood lightens in Meredith, they learn of the Negro revolt in the South. They learn of the atrocities that occurred just one day after Cassie's death. Teacher Holt brings in The Liberator. Mammann bans the paper from the house. With all the talk of the Negro.....
