Chapter 13 Summary

Work on the quilt begins under the watchful eye of Ann, the stepmother. Ann instructs Catherine that she cut the pieces exactly for the finest-quality work. Catherine complains about the slowness of her progress. Catherine finds much joy in the walks home from school, though, with her friends, Sophy and Cassie. Asa conveniently positions himself near the fence by the school so that he may see Sophy and walk with her. Another surprise happens when Joshua walks to the school to pick up some books that Teacher Holt has obtained for him. Later, Joshua confesses that he is very interested in continuing his education, which is a surprise to the group because of his reputation at school. At home, work continues under the very close scrutiny of Ann. Just when Catherine begins to.....
