Chapter 12 Summary

Uncle Jack pays a visit to the Hall family in which he is inclined to tell a joke. Unfortunately, while humorous and light-hearted, Ann takes offense and that hastens Uncle Jack's departure. Mr. Hall stews about it and finally has an outburst that describes how he feels about the incident "You know he meant no offense!" (79). The transition continues as Ann requires Catherine and Matty to take part in serious spring cleaning. Catherine feels like she has no time at all to see Cassie. Catherine does well to keep quiet about her growing contempt about the cleaning. One day, Cassie visits and insists that Catherine see the new mural that an artist has stenciled in their home.
