Chapter 9 Summary

The men continue to work to collect the tree sap and make "sirup," even spending the night in the camp to keep the fires going. During one night, Joshua Nelson's mother suffers through a crisis. Her cow suddenly jerks upward, sending a horn through her cheek. Upon hearing the news, Mrs. Shipman sends over some food to help. The weather is volatile; it is cold one day and warm the next. All fear this will stop the flow of sap. Their fears are realized when the sap season ends prematurely.

Josh sees Teacher Holt and Aunt Lucy kiss one night at the camp and tells Asa. Asa in turn tells Cassie and Catherine. Shortly after this, a well-dressed man appears in a fine coach and seeks out Mr. Jeremy Preston. All the townspeople learn.....
