Chapter 3 Summary

The temperature drops, and Matty becomes ill. Catherine takes care of her, but Mrs. Shipman arrives once she learns of Matty's illness. Mrs. Shipman sees that Catherine has done all she can and then returns home. Catherine has obtained permission from Mr. Holt to bring her writing book home. To Catherine's dismay, she misplaces the book on her way home. It mysteriously appears a couple of days later under a stone near Wally Piper's place. Catherine notices a note inscribed inside the tablet's cover. The next day she picks up a note left in their yard. Catherine is to meet someone at the stone without any mention of place and time.
