Chapter 2 Summary

Catherine sees her "apparition" again in the same location as before in Piper's Woods. Asa and Cassie tease her about it, but Catherine vows that she will investigate the spot further. A classmate of theirs, Sophy, tells the girls of her family's need to send her to work in Lowell, Massachusetts. This makes Catherine sad, because she loves her current life, her home, her friends, and her family. Mrs. Shipman's sister Lucy arrives late one night. Lucy brings with her many trunks filled with wonderful garments and sewing accessories. Cassie and Catherine sew the accessories onto their old clothes to "fancy" them up a bit. The girls have extra time to do this because the weather brings an early snowstorm that cancels school. Thanksgiving Day approaches, and they all gather. The Shipman family.....
