Summary

In Chapter 1, the opening sentence states that if CC de Poitiers had known she was going to be murdered, she might have done things differently, like buying her husband a Christmas gift, going to her daughter’s recital, or going to work instead of a cheap motel room with her boyfriend, Saul. In the hotel room, CC gave Saul a copy of her book and asked if he liked it. It was not the first time she had asked him about it, and he had no more praise to give her for it. He said he liked her picture, but only because he had taken it. Saul feared he was turning into CC, a woman he described as being hateful, insensitive, and cold.
