Bella is a mixed-breed dog and the narrator of the novel. Bella is a sweet, kind, and unfailingly loyal dog who feels, from puppyhood, an instant and unbreakable bond with her owner, Lucas. Born among a cat colony in an abandoned building’s crawlspace, Bella is thrilled with her new life with Lucas. When Bella becomes the victim of a war being waged by Gunter against Lucas, Bella cannot understand why she is being taken away and put into the pound. All she wants is to go home to Lucas. Bella is freed from the pound, but taken to a foster family until Lucas and Mom can relocate to a place where Denver County laws do not apply.
