Summary

In Chapter 13, Bella heads out of town into the dark, spending an uncomfortable night near the river. Bella begins to follow a hiking trail, spending each night wherever she can as she goes. She scavenges for food from picnic areas. Bella comes upon two men illegally hunting a cougar. Bella discovers a dead female cougar, and a baby cougar begins to follow Bella around. Bella decides she must protect Big Kitten just as Mother Cat once protected her. Bella also decides to look after Big Kitten because Lucas watches over cats, and because Bella thinks Lucas would want her to protect Big Kitten. As they travel, they feed on recently killed animals, and scavenge from picnic grounds. One night, Bella and Big Kitten are confronted by coyotes. Bella believes it will be a fight to the death.
