Summary

In Chapter 1, Bella is a dog that resembles a pit bull. Bella’s earliest memory is the smell of cats, who also inhabit the abandoned house’s crawlspace where she and her family live. Bella is friendly with the kittens and makes friends with Mother Cat. They are discovered by workers who realize the cat colony must be removed to demo the building and the neighborhood for apartments. They also realize someone has been feeding the cats. Three human beings come into the crawlspace. Bella naturally feels drawn to them, but Mother Cat pulls Bella back away from the people with her kittens. The people begin to catch as many cats and kittens as they can. They also take Bella’s mother and siblings. Sometime later, a fourth human being shows up. He is the one who has been feeding them all.
