Human Nature

The Spiders exhibit a strong human nature in their actions throughout the story. They have lived for hundreds of years in a specific pattern - sleeping through the Dark periods when their planet becomes inhospitable. But human nature dictates that there would come a time in which the Spiders began to work on advances that would allow them to live out the years without retreating to underground caves. It's also human nature that some would focus on specific aspects of this problem while others looked toward other aspects. This is seen clearly in the interaction between Sherkaner, Unnerby and Victory. Sherkaner is the brains while Victory serves as a sounding board, eliminating the ideas that are completely unworkable.
