The Train

The train attacked by terrorists at Kolabagan station symbolizes societal destruction. When the terrorists light the train on fire, they are attacking their governmental system. Though Javin is the only character to witness the event, the train's presence haunts the novel, reminding the characters of the fragility of their world, and how quickly it might be dismantled.

Jivan's Cigarette

The cigarette Javin smokes on the Kolabagan station platform symbolizes freedom. She feels that while smoking she is closer to living the life and being the person she wants to. Smoking in the dark by herself, Javin is able to imagine herself as a city girl, someone who is free to speak and live the way they want.

Acting Class

Lovely's acting class symbolizes agency. Though Lovely's identity is constantly challenged by her community, by society at large, she does not give up pursuing her dreams...
