Chapters 21-28 Summary

In Chapter 21, the unnamed narrator describes nightmares he had after the funeral.

In Chapter 22, Charlie visits Earl Getlin at the state prison and hears his story about the night Otis Timson threatened him. However, Charlie recognizes several problems with Earl's story even though it corroborates Sims' story. Charlie is troubled, afraid that Otis' statement was a lie.

In Chapter 23, the unnamed narrator describes how he began to sneak up to the Ryan house and spy on Jonah and Miles.

In Chapter 24, Miles begins studying his file on Missy's death, ignoring everything around him, including Jonah. When Sarah comes by later for a prearranged date, Miles tells her everything that has happened. Later, Miles returns to the file and Sarah leaves. At the same time, Charlie tries to soothe the district attorney and the Timson family lawyer who want to press charges...
