Don does not experience the sensation of being drawn towards the light through a dark tunnel that is often portrayed when someone dies. Instead, at the moment the truck impacted the car, he finds himself standing in heaven surrounded by an brilliant light. A large crowd of people stands before a large, ornate gate. The crowd moves toward Don, and he begins to recognize people he knows. The first person he sees is his grandfather, Joe Kulbeth.
