Summary

Scene 1 begins in in the middle of the night. Leo, a 21-year-old man, enters a Manhattan apartment with his bicycle. He smiles as Vera, his 91-yea-old grandmother, opens the door in her nightgown. Vera covers her mouth as she speaks in an attempt to hide her gums, as she is not wearing dentures at the moment. She is confused as she did not expect Leo's presence.

Leo enters and asks why Vera has not changed the name on her apartment buzzer. It still says Joe Joseph, after her late husband. He offers to help his grandmother with the task, but she quickly sees through his façade and remarks that Leo must need a place to stay.

Vera tells her grandson to wait as she goes to retrieve her dentures and hearing aid. When she returns, she immediately asks Leo if he is high...
