Summary

In Chapter 1.3, Ferguson and his parents live in Millburn, New Jersey. His father and mother run 3 Brothers Home World and Roseland Photo, respectively. Uncle Lew has a son, Andrew, who is killed in the Korean War. Lew drinks and gambles to cope with the death, and he steals money from 3 Brothers Home World’s funds to feed his gambling addiction. Stanley discovers what has happened. Lew tells him that the criminal to whom Lew is in debt is threatening to hurt or kill him unless Lew works with him to burn down the 3 Brothers Home World warehouse and collect the insurance money. Stanley, conflicted, decides to help his brother by cooperating with the scheme. However, he changes his mind and waits at night in the warehouse to foil the scheme.
