Summary

Part 1, set on September 11, 2001, details the crashing of the planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the field in Pennsylvania. Cal Spencer, chief warrant officer, was finishing up a training mission and thinking about the men on his team, which included Sam Diller and Pat Essex. Because they were good men, he suspected one day they might get a real mission. He was on his way home when he heard the news of the World Trade Center on the radio.

Meanwhile, Marcha Spencer got a call from Lisa Diller telling her to turn on the television. As soon as they saw what was happening they knew their husbands would be leaving soon. Spencer and Diller were both stationed at Fort Campbell, headquarters of the U.S. Army’s Fifth Special Forces Group.
