Es invierno y han pasado alrededor de 3 o 4 meses. Huck ha estado yendo a la escuela la mayor parte del tiempo. Él se está acostumbrando a sus nuevas costumbres: ir a la escuela y vivir una vida 'civilizada'. Aún extraña a veces dormir en el bosque como antes.

Huck ve huellas en la nieve. Se trata de una bota con una cruz para alejar al diablo. Él va a ver al Juez Thatcher. El juez le dice a Huck que acaban de llegar $150 para él, pero Huck insiste para que el juez tome ese dinero junto con el resto de los $6,000. El juez se confunde, pero Huck insiste en que tome el dinero y no pregunte por qué.
