Huck y Jim se encuentran casi en la parte inferior de Illinois, cerca de la ciudad de Cairo. Ellos quieren detenerse allí, vender la balsa, y abrirse camino por el río Ohio hasta llegar a los Estados libres.

Una noche, Huck va a atar la balsa a la orilla, pero la corriente es demasiado fuerte y rompe la amarra. Huck busca en el río para ver si la encuentra (porque Jim y todas sus cosas están dentro), pero la niebla es demasiado densa. Ellos gritan de acá para allá, porque no pueden verse uno al otro. Huck se duerme y cuando despierta, ve a Jim dormido en la balsa.

Sube a la balsa y pretende acabarse de despertar. Jim está tan emocionado de ver a Huck vivo, pero Huck le dice que él ha estado allí todo el tiempo, y hace sentir a Jim estúpido. Huck le dice que él ha estado o borracho o soñando, pero que él ha estado allí todo el tiempo y que no sabe de lo que Jim está hablando. Jim finalmente se percata que Huck quiere hacerlo el tonto porque nota las hojas y la basura en la balsa. Él se enfada y se mete en la carpa. Huck se siente culpable por hacer sentir tan mal a Jim.
