Huck entra en la casa y habla con la mujer durante un rato acerca de lo que ha estado sucediendo en torno a la ciudad. Padre supuestamente desapareció, y algunas personas piensan él puede haber matado a Huck para obtener su dinero. Algunos otros piensan que Jim lo hizo y hay una recompensa de $300 por él. La mujer piensa que Jim podría estar cerca de la Isla de Jackson, porque vio humo por allí. Su marido y otro hombre fueron a inspeccionar. Huck se pone muy nervioso porque la mujer se da cuenta que es un muchacho. Ella puede decirlo por la forma en que lanza, como ensarta una aguja, y coge cosas en su regazo (con las piernas juntas).

Él inventa una historia de que se escapó de un viejo campesino muy malo que lo criaba. Huck dice que él quería ir a Goshen, y la mujer le dice que está en San Petersburgo.
