Según su acuerdo previo, el ejército del joven Fortinbrás atraviesa pacíficamente Dinamarca en su camino a luchar contra Polonia. Hamlet se critica a sí mismo por su inacción.

En comparación con Fortinbrás, que prontamente toma medidas contra Polonia por una trivial porción de tierra, Hamlet se siente como un cobarde holgazán. Hamlet promete no pensar en nada más que vengar el asesinato de su padre, diciendo: "'Oh a partir de este momento / ¡Sean de sangre mis pensamientos o no merezcan sino baldón!'"
