Hamlet visita la recámara de la Reina Gertrudis y la asusta con sus fuertes recriminaciones. Espiando la discusión detrás de un tapiz (telón), el espía Polonio se preocupa por la seguridad de Gertrudis y pide ayuda. Confundiendo al espía oculto con el Rey Claudio, Hamlet embiste con una estocada de su espada a través del telón y mata a Polonio. Hamlet sigue reprendiendo a su vergonzosa madre por casarse con el vil hermano de su amado esposo. El fantasma de pronto se le aparece a Hamlet, vestido con pijama. El fantasma del rey amonesta a Hamlet por relegar su venganza.

La Reina Gertrudis está horrorizada por el loco comportamiento de Hamlet; pues el fantasma es invisible para ella, Gertrudis cree que Hamlet conversa con el aire. Hamlet le encarga a su madre abstenerse de la cama incestuosa de su tío. Él le revela a su madre su verdadero estado de cordura, y Gertrudis promete mantener en secreto a Claudio la artificial y astuta locura de Hamlet. Conocedor de la orden de enviarlo a Inglaterra, el Príncipe Hamlet percibe una trampa. Él promete desconfiar de Ricardo y Guillermo como desconfiaría de serpientes con colmillos. El astuto príncipe lleva arrastrando el cadáver de Polonio a una habitación vecina y se despide de su madre dándole las buenas noches.
