Afirmando que la locura de Hamlet es un peligro para el estado y su reinado, el Rey Claudio ordena a Ricardo y Guillermo acompañar a Hamlet en el viaje a Inglaterra. Polonio informa que va a espiar la visita de Hamlet a la Reina Gertrudis ocultándose detrás de un tapiz (telón) en su dormitorio.

Atormentado por su conciencia culpable, el Rey Claudio intenta orar por el perdón. Sin embargo, debido a que aún posee los frutos de su crimen - a saber, su corona, su reina, y su ambición - él sabe que su arrepentimiento es insuficiente. Claudio se lamenta: "'Mis palabras vuelan a lo alto, mis pensamientos aquí se quedan. / Las palabras sin pensamientos nunca van al cielo'". Acto 3, Escena 3, líneas 97-98

Mientras el culpable Rey ora de rodillas, Hamlet en silencio saca su espada para vengarse. Deteniéndose, Hamlet se da cuenta de que matar a Claudio en medio de la confesión enviaría al desahogado Rey directamente al cielo. La venganza vendrá más tarde para Hamlet, cuando el Rey Claudio esté ocupado en algún acto vil o libidinoso, y por lo tanto sea totalmente responsable de sus pecados.
