Because it is her story to tell, Mary Newbury is the central character of Witch Child, and all of the action in the story revolves around her. As she reveals her experiences, readers see her progress from a girl with an uncertain future to a woman sure of her abilities and certain of the path she must take. In the beginning of the story, she does not understand why a wealthy English woman would be interested in her fate, sending her away from England and into the New World. However, learning that this woman is actually her mother, Mary realizes that it is from her that she received her supernatural powers. Her mother's intense interest in her safety strengthens Mary's resolve not to abandon her ways.
