In England, religious differences of the seventeenth century caused much bloodshed and civil unrest. Bloody revolutions and religious persecution wracked England for scores of years. Kings and queens would slaughter men and women of different religious persuasions. When the monarchy of Charles I was overthrown, royalists were killed by the supporters of Oliver Cromwell. After Cromwell died, royalists turned the tables and murdered the supporters of Cromwell.
