According to a brief note at the beginning of the book, Mary Newbury's journal is said to have been found sewn in between the layers of a newly discovered quilt dating from the Colonial era. According to the fictional compiler, Alison Ellman of Boston, Massachusetts, the journal entries have only been altered to reflect modern methods of spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing.
This diary method allows Rees to record the thoughts and activities of Mary and allows readers to find themselves in the position of a young girl constantly afraid that she will be found out as a witch. However, readers also discover that being considered a witch does not truly mean someone is evil; Mary calls herself a witch, but she does not harm anyone or use her power for evil.
