When Harrop suddenly disappears, those first on the scene are perplexed because they can find no signs of preparation for his departure. Indeed, what evidence there is suggests a hasty exit. A book is even open on a table in the dining room he had turned into a study, as if he had been in the middle of reading it when he left. The lamp he had been reading by seems to have burned out on its own after his disappearance.
