The Return of the Soldier Adaptations
The Return of the Soldier was released by Golden Communications in January 1983. Directed by Alan Bridges and starring Julie Christie as Kitty, Alan Bates as Chris, Glenda Jackson as Margret, Ann Margret as Jenny, and Ian Holme as Dr. Anderson, the film was a critical success, called a faithful adaptation of West's novel. The cast is superb, highly praised for its acting.
Although not a popular success (the film played the college/art theater circuit) the film is an excellent piece of work. Alan Bridges's direction is like West's prose style, subtle and unobtrusive. The film has the feel and look — soft focused and slow paced — of many B.B.C./P.B.S. Masterpiece Theatre productions.
