Jalil's atheism is significant to understanding his personality, but it is not a theme in Realm of the Reaper. April's own belief in God has more influence on her behavior in Enter the Enchanted than Jalil's atheism has on his behavior in Realm of the Reaper. Of more importance for the narrative is the obsessive-compulsive disorder that is the source of his atheism and of his insistence on being a rationalist. This disorder was identified by Sigmund Freud, who characterized it as a form of "objectification," in which an object is substituted in the mind for another object or emotion; in obsessive-compulsive disorder the compulsive behavior would be a substitute for something else, perhaps another form of behavior.
