The title of the book comes from the eighth chapter of Matthew,which Jesus warns that those without faith in Him will be driven into the "Outer Dark," a place of "wailing and grinding of teeth." When Rinthy gives birth to Culla's child, Culla takes the baby and leaves it in the forest to die, hoping to rid himself of the evidence of his sin. The baby is found, however, by an old tinker, who takes it with him. Soon thereafter Rinthy, who has never believed that her baby is dead, as her brother has insisted, goes off in blind search of the child. Culla then follows, but his reasons for doing so remain unclear.

In their travels, Rinthy and Culla meet numerous strangers. Because Rinthy seeks her baby out of maternal love, she addresses each person she encounters with honesty and innocence, and she is...
