Elhanan Rosenbaum is a learned man who witnessed the atrocities of the Holocaust as a child. He longs to serve as a witness and thus cherishes his memory.
Wiesel manifests Elhanan's devotion to memory by portraying his undying love of his wife, Talia. She has been dead for many years, but he never forgets her and refuses to think about dating again. He is haunted by his inability to rescue Zoltan's wife when she was raped by his friend Itzik the Long.
Malkiel Rosenbaum loves his father and is a devoted son who willingly travels to the Feherfalu graveyard to look at tombstones and help put his father's mind at ease about the incident involving Itzik. He is, however, a womanizer who easily gets sidetracked from his urgent mission by attractive females.
