Social Sensitivity

This author is acutely aware of the problems of teen-agers, especially boys. For this reason he frequently depicts young boys coming to realize their sexuality. These scenes although presented realistically are not overly detailed nor titillating; rather, they present an accurate portrait of young boys' concerns in their teen years. Several masturbation scenes occur early in the novel, usually the result of Paul's lusting after his older and somewhat voluptuous aunt, who leaves Monument at an opportune moment. The guilt Paul experiences because of his feelings and his behavior toward his aunt are vividly portrayed in his extreme discomfort when he must go to confession. Also, some voyeurism occurs. Cormier, when asked why he included Paul's witnessing of the scene between the grocer and Theresa as well as the incest scene between the Winslow twins, answered.....
