The major theme of "The Dunwich Horror" is that of the smallness of human experience in a vast and largely unknown universe. This theme is central to much of Lovecraft's work. In his Cthulhu Mythos stories, Lovecraft emphasizes the insignificance of humanity by making it only one of a number of sentient races that have dominated Earth and will dominate the planet after mankind has disappeared. Indeed, "The Dunwich Horror" declares that the Earth did not originally belong in the space and time that it does now; it once was in another space-time dimension and was home of the "Elder Things" — more often called the "Great Old Ones" in other Cthulhu Mythos stories. Yog-Sothoth, who plays an important off-stage role in "The Dunwich Horror," is the Old One who exists everywhere and everytime; through him a gate could be opened that would allow the malevolent Old Ones...
