Deep Wizardry is the second book in a series that so far includes three selfcontained books: So You Want to Be a Wizard, Deep Wizardry, and High Wizardry. Together, they tell the story of thirteen-year-old Juanita (Nita) Callahan and twelve-year-old Christopher (Kit) Rodriguez, who have found that they have magical powers and who have learned to use these powers through a wizards' training manual.

Duane's unique interpretation of wizards blends elements of science fiction and fantasy: Wizards use their powers on the side of good to postpone entropy, the winding-down of the universe toward death. This often involves a battle with the Lone Power, a Luciferlike being who rebelled in the beginning of Creation and brought death into the universe.
