Characters

The protagonist in The Crossing is Billy Parham, the son of a rancher in southwest New Mexico, who, when the main action of the novel begins, is sixteen years old. Billy is fascinated by the wildness that both wolves and Mexico represent. His obsession with capturing the marauding wolf makes him into a master trapper as he becomes increasingly more knowledgeable about and closer to nature.

Although readers are never made directly privy to Billy's thoughts, his words and actions reveal him to be courageous and highly principled. He repays his debts and tries to fulfill his responsibilities; when he fails to do so, he seems to suffer guilt and he makes what reparation he can. Throughout Part I, Billy's values are repeatedly tested as again and again he is encouraged by others to view.....
