Characters

a small resort hotel at the CoroInmandel coast, an assorted group of guests is thrown together for a week.

There is an elderly couple, a group of Indian politicians who are arranging the campaign of a local candidate, Krishnan, and especially, a young English couple on their honeymoon.

Blaise, the young, handsome diplomat, represents the arrogance and insensitivity of a British colonial upper class.

He despises things Indian and cannot understand that his young bride, Mary, is magnetically drawn to the country and its people. Mary's interest in India and its people creates several confrontations with her husband, but the real reason for these quarrels is the fact that Mary realizes that her marriage to the self-important and selfish young man was a mistake. This she realizes as she meets the young Indian.....
