Gloria Miklowitz was born May 18, 1927, in New York, NY. Her father, Simon, was president of a steamship company and her mother's name was Ella. Miklowitz's writing career began very early. In third grade when a composition of hers earned an A, her parents told her she was going to be a writer one day. After graduating from high school in New York, she attended Hunter College (now Hunter College of the City University of New York) during the years 1944-45. She broke into journalism by working on the newspaper staff in both high school and college. She graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in English in 1948. She did graduate study at New York University the same year at night while working by day in publishing as a secretary at Bantam Books.
