In The Changling Sea McKillip returns to the theme of the importance of true love with the right person. She first introduced this theme in The Throme of Erril of Sherill (1973), and since both works are essentially "coming-of-age novels", this is an appropriate theme.

The main character in both works must decide which person they really love, and once they decide, the reader knows they will find true happiness.
