As the novel opens, Qwill is re-evaluating his life. He is forty-six years old and unmarried. Although he is always short of money, he sends part of his earnings to his ex-wife, not because she really needs the money, but because she represents his closest human tie. His family consists of the two Siamese cats with whom he shares his apartment and his life. Nevertheless, he has reached the stage of life when he is beginning to consider the advantages of settling down and establishing a true home. Discovering that his cholesterol is high and he must diet rigorously merely adds to his sense of fading youth.
