Carry On, Mr. Bowditch Setting

The novel's principal locale is Salem, Massachusetts, from the Revolutionary War to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Beginning when Nat is six years old and following him into adulthood, the narrative draws the reader into early American times and illustrates the importance of shipping to the new nation. Raised in a community where life revolves around sailing, Nat learns about ships and becomes interested in improving navigational practices.
