There was something of a scramble in Hollywood to put out a movie of The Bridges of Madison County in order to capitalized on the book's popularity and to tap into the public's enthusiasm for it. The film was finally directed by Clint Eastwood, who at first glance may appear at odd choice — Dirty Harry does Madison County? — however, it turned out to be a good one.

Eastwood had been developing as a director, alongside his tough-guy, action-movie career, and had done a number of different kinds of films, some tough, some not. Obviously the prospect of directing The Bridges of Madison County offered him an opportunity to extend his repertoire.
