Themes

Klause explores many themes through the character of Vivian. One of the chief themes is the importance of honesty and the dangers of dishonesty. The tension throughout the novel results mainly from the reader's wondering when she will reveal her identity as a werewolf to Aiden.

Because Vivian is dishonest about this fact from the beginning, she is forced to pay a price for it. She not only loses Aiden as a romantic partner, she also brings on the very real threat of his death. Once she does reveal to him that she is a werewolf, the pack has to decide if they should kill him to prevent being discovered by the other townspeople. In this way, Klause complicates the theme of honesty in the novel. We might wonder, momentarily, if Vivian should have remained.....
