Blood and Chocolate draws from both traditional lore and recent wolf ethology to create a werewolf pack with a distinct culture. Its members must constantly guard their secrets, and some of their innate instincts, when living close to humans. In their struggle to conform to suburban life, the pack members' situation resembles that of other "outsider" groups. As often happens, the pack's teenagers feel the tensions most keenly. This sets the stage for a compelling novel which can be read as an adolescent identity quest, a paranormal romance, a tale of group survival against daunting odds, or a study in leadership and succession. It is also a compelling story with episodes painted in superb prose: some as bittersweet as chocolate, some as sharp as the taste of blood.
