The central episode involving the destruction of the cauldron is based on an event in the Mabinogion, also recounted by Evangeline Walton. The handling of the episode, however, is more evocative of Tolkien, whose fantasy trilogy also focuses on a quest to destroy an object of power. For Tolkien too the destruction must be undertaken by a volunteer who risks death. In Alexander the deed leads to certain death.
